******************************* WOW MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE BOOSTS INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION ******************************* PLEASE READ, AS THIS DOCUMENT HAS CHANGED. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------- 1. There's no need to remove, rename or change the read-only attribute of the Engine ini file. 2. Copy "wow-maximum-performance-boosts.zip" to your computer desktop. 3. If The Outer Worlds game is running, exit the game. 4. Right-click the zip file and select the option to unpack the files to your desktop. 5. Open the folder for your game version (either, "Epic Launcher Version" or "Windows Store Version"). 6. Double-click the RunMe batch file (do *not* select the, "Run as Administrator" option). 7. Follow the instructions of the batch file to backup Engine.ini and replace it with the new one, or choose the option to stop the installation. The new ini file will be set to read- only to prevent the game from overwriting it. 8. That's it! In the WindowsNoEditor folder will be these files: * Engine.bak.ini: A copy of the default Engine.ini game file * Engine.ini: The new Engine.ini for this mod * Engine_[date]_[time].ini: A backup of the previous Engine.ini (where [date] is the current date in the format year-month-day and [time] is the time the batch file ran, in the format hours-minutes) 9. To confirm the installation was successful, open the log file that was created in the same folder as the batch file. If the log file isn't present, see the section, "Troubleshooting Common Issues". 10. The log file created is named Install_Engine_[date]_[time].txt (where [date] is the current date and [time] is the time you ran the batch file). If the phrases, "Access Denied" or "0 File(s) Copied" don't appear in the log file, the installation completed successfully. 11. For further assistance, see the section, "Contacting the Author" . INFORMATION ABOUT THE MOD ------------------------- Game Modified: The Outer Worlds Mod Name: WOW Maximum Performance Boosts Mod Series: Wonderfully Optimized Worlds Mod Author: Sp0ckrates (spelled with a zero) Purpose of the Mod: Replaces the Engine ini file for The Outer Worlds with one that adds the settings recommended by the game engine developers to provide maximum performance boosts. Additional Information: Settings of the Engine ini file of this mod are recommended by the UE4 website for low quality and high performance, as described at the link, https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Engine/Performance/Scalability/ScalabilityReference/index.html Mod Version: 2.4 Mod Release Date: 11/29/19 Mod Features: * NEW: Corrected this readme file to instruct the user to *not* use the, "Run as Administrator" option when launching the RunMe batch file. * Also has the batch file enhancements and fixes for the "light flicker", "bright face" and "camera jitter" bugs of previous versions. Included Files: * Engine.bak.ini: A copy of the original Engine.ini installed by the game. * Engine.ini: A read-only version of Engine.wow.ini you may use to manually install (copy and paste) yourself, if you prefer to not use the batch file. * Engine.wow.ini: The Engine ini file installed by the RunMe batch file. * RunMe.bat: The batch file that installs Engine.bak.ini and Engine.wow.ini. * ReadMe.txt: This readme document. Commands Used by the Batch File: * xcopy /R /Y Engine.wow.ini [PathToGameFolder] (copies Engine.wow.ini to the game folder) * xcopy /R /Y Engine.bak.ini [PathToGameFolder] (copies Engine.bak.ini to the game folder) * attrib -R [PathToGameFolder]\Engine.ini (removes the read-only attribute from the current Engine.ini) * ren "[PathToGameFolder]\Engine.ini" "Engine_%date:~-4,4%-%date:~-10,2%-%date:~-7,2%_%time:~0,2%-%time:~3,2%-%time:~6,2%.ini" (renames the current Engine.ini as a backup) * ren [PathToGameFolder]\Engine.wow.ini Engine.ini (renames the new file as Engine.ini) * attrib +R [PathToGameFolder]\Engine.ini (adds the read-only attribute to the new Engine.ini) Known Issues: Increasing performance has some expected effects. * Shadows: Shadows sometimes rarely don't have smooth edges. * Dialog: When entering dialog, textures for NPCs are briefly blurry, but quickly become clear. * Texture Detail: The greatest performance boosts are gained by reducing details of textures for the 3D models, including those of NPC faces. Wrinkles, scars, dirt and such will be less visible. TROUBLESHOOTING COMMON ISSUES ----------------------------- A. There's no install log after running the batch file: If this happens, run the RunMe batch file again by double-clicking it instead of right-clicking and selecting, "Run as Administrator". Some anti-virus apps don't like it when batch files run with elevated privileges and prevent them from completing some tasks. B. Install log has an Access Denied error or shows no files copied: After installing the mod, if you see an the phrases, "access denied" or, "0 Files Copied" in the install log (see step (9) in the section, "Installation Instructions") the mod did not install successfully. The errors are *not* caused by the file being read only. It's likely caused by the game running when the batch file is launched, or it's a Windows permissions issue. Make sure you exit the game and aren't logging on to the computer with a limited account (see steps (3) and (6) in the same section). For additional help, ask the author (see the section, "Contacting the Author"). UNINSTALLING THE MOD -------------------- To update the mod to a newer version, simply follow the steps in the section, "Installation Instructions". To remove the mod completely, follow these steps: 1. Browse to the WindowsNoEditor folder. 2. Right-click Engine.ini, select Properties and clear the Read-Only check box. 3. Rename Engine.ini as Engine.myBackup.ini. 4. Rename the most recent Engine_[date]_[time].ini file as Engine.ini, or rename Engine.bak.ini as Engine.ini. 5. If you don't want the game to overwrite it, set the read-only attribute for the file you just renamed.
